From the Principal

Dear SJMS Community

Every year on the first Sunday of September we celebrate Father’s Day. It is a day when we spoil and spend time with dad or a significant person, as a way of saying “thank you for all of the things you do for me”.

St Joseph is the patron saint for fathers around the world. Father’s Day is a good time to pause to appreciate a unique person that God has put into our lives – our ‘father’. It is easy to take fathers for granted.

I wish all fathers and special persons involved in the formation of our wonderful students at St Joseph’s Memorial a wonderful day on Sunday!

Confirmation

Last Thursday saw 12 of our students celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. It was a unique celebration where, in these COVID-19 times, Fr Paul Mullins administered the laying of hands and anointing of chrism and was supported by Fr Stan Lim and Fr Alan Wong, as normally the Archbishop would administer the sacrament. Can I thank Fr Paul, Fr Stan and Fr Alan for their efforts in allowing the students to celebrate their sacraments in the circumstances that this year has presented.

Congratulations:

Andy, Cormac, Da-Yun, Eloise, Emily, Gabrielle, Grace, Gu, Harry B, Harry H, Lucy and Orla

In October the students will celebrate the Sacrament of First Holy Communion in which the community wishes them all the best.

May each of you have the strength to follow Jesus and become involved in the mission which Jesus left to our Church.

Child Protection Week

The second week of September is Child Protection Week (6/9 - 12/9). The theme for the 2020 National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) Child Protection Week campaign is ‘Putting children first’. While this has always been at the forefront of the NAPCAN, it has been chosen as this year’s theme as it underpins wellbeing of all children.

In Child Protection Week we are asked to be someone who listens to children, someone who will start a conversation with children and if needed, be that someone whom children will turn to when in need. The Commission is committed to the safety, wellbeing and protection of all children and young people from harm. This includes supporting the rights of the child and child safe environments by working together with key partner agencies towards care and protection of children within our community.

ACPW also aligns with the launch of our R-6 Pulse Check Survey, which is a questionnaire that will be given to all students in R-6 Catholic Schools to enable schools to regularly monitor the wellbeing of young people in our care. Further information about this survey will be sent this week in a letter to all parents.

Basketballers

Congratulations to the Year 4 Basketball team who in their season (against other teams in Year 5) won their first game!! Players have been training with Mr Siinmaa and our Year 6 students at lunch times. Well done boys and girls.

Thank you to all coaches for your efforts in allowing our students to grow and improve in their chosen sport.

Debaters

Congratulations to our debaters who get stronger and stronger every round of the SA Debating Schools Competition. Last week they won two of a possible three debates, with three of our debaters awarded “Debater of the Night” for their outstanding rebuttals!

Science Week

Last week our students were marvelled by Mr Dolgner who conducted science experiments using dry ice. Mr Dolgner was in his element as he went back to his roots as a specialist Science teacher in the US. To enjoy the photos click here.

Rescheduled Events

Due to COVID, I encourage you to observe the upcoming dates. As we endeavour to comply with restrictions and reschedule events, we will update this from time to time. Changes reflected in upcoming dates include:

Touch Football: rescheduled to Thursday 3 September. Parents in Year 4 to 6 have received a letter.

Sports Day: rescheduled to Friday 30 October. More details to follow.

Book Week: rescheduled to Week 2 Term 4 2020, October 17-23. More details to follow.

Learning Journey: moved to an online exposé in Week 8 Term 3 2020.

Photo Day: rescheduled to Wednesday 28 October. More details to follow.

As we understand the restrictions closer to the dates of the events, we will inform parents to ensure that the latest details are given out to our community. As an example, Mr Siinmaa has planned most of the Sports Day for Friday 30 October, however there is a restriction around events being limited to 1000 people. At this point in time that would mean that 2 adults per student could attend, however we will hold off on all communication until as late as possible to ensure a consistent message is going out to parents. Our apologies if this comes across as tardy communication, however we want to ensure information is as accurate as can be.

God Bless

Brady Stallard

From the Assistant Principal RIM

Dear Parents and Caregivers

It is hard to believe that we are coming to the end of winter. Next Monday, on the eve of Spring, we are invited by the churches of Victoria to be a light in the darkness.

7pm, Monday 31 August 2020

As the last light of the last day of winter fades, stand in your front garden and spend some time in silence, perhaps light a candle, to remember all those who have lost their lives this year, especially to COVID-19 and that we move forward with healing. Then, as the first night of spring begins, look to the future with prayer and hope. Let us move from the cold and the dark into warmth and light together.

The Hope of Spring

God, thank you for Spring and the hope of warmer, longer, brighter days.
Thank you for the coming of growth and life and birth.
Thank you that things are coming awake in the world.
This is what our calendar says, and we do see some signs that it is real.
But we also still struggle with the residual layover of winter.
Now we ask that you bring into reality all that belongs in this season.
Your word says that we will have provision, and hope, and joy, and health and loving relationships here and now in this life.
We ask that what belongs in this season would become actual in our practical lives.
We hope in you and in your promises. We hope in your gift of Spring.
Amen

Sacramental Program

Last Thursday evening, Fr Paul Mullins used these words 'Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit’ when he anointed the Confirmation Candidates with the oil of Chrism during the Confirmation Ceremony. This seal, marks us as a witness of Christ.

At Pentecost, the Apostles received the fullness of the Holy Spirit enabling them to evangelise and serve God. Through Confirmation, we too are prepared for public ministry and receive the fullness of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which help us to be holy.

We look forward to welcoming the candidates as full members of the Catholic Church community when they receive Eucharist for the first time in October. Please keep them in your prayers.

St Vincent de Paul News

Max Ormsby from St Vincent de Paul chapter of Norwood thanked the community for their generous donations of canned soup and Vegemite earlier this term. The donated goods were delivered to the Men’s Crisis Centre in Whitmore Square where St Vincent de Paul provide crisis accommodation, meals and support services for homeless and vulnerable men in Adelaide.

Bake Sale

Thank you to Kate, Mary and Amalia for organising a Bake Sale at Williams Street to support St Vincent de Paul in Week 4. Their efforts managed to raise $100 for Vinnies Winter Appeal. What a fantastic effort. Students at Bridge Street will have the opportunity to purchase baked goods on Wednesday September 2.

God Bless

SJMS Sports Update

Dear Parents and Caregivers

It is a very busy and exciting time for PE and our SJMS Sporting Teams as we've now passed the halfway mark for Term 3.

Physical Education

Students at both Bridge St and William St have been working very hard to continue developing their physical and interpersonal skills throughout the term in a range of sports. All students have displayed great resilience in the tricky weather conditions, especially when we have been forced to head indoors into the 'Gym' and Library.
Year 4-6 students have been building their skills, communication and knowledge of the game as they prepare to take part in the SACPSSA Touch Football Carnival in Week 7, which is bound to be a fantastic day celebrating their learning and representing the school.
Starting in Week 6, students in Years 2-6 will be taking part in a 4 week 'Batter Up' Softball program at William St during PE time on Wednesdays. This is a great opportunity that we were lucky enough to secure through Sporting Schools.

Sports Day

I have been working alongside Mr Stallard to follow current health advise in preparation for the 2020 SJMS Sports Day, which is looking very promising for early Term 4, restrictions permitting of course. More information will follow in the coming weeks as we finalise further details.

SJMS Sports

Our condensed season of Winter Sport is well underway with the SJMS Netball, Football and Basketball teams giving it their all each week and displaying the school values. Netball nominations have now closed for the upcoming Summer 2020/2021 Season, with Cricket nominations for Term 4 becoming available soon. I must thank our coaches for their continued efforts with their teams, and also families who have done a fantastic job transitioning to the online nomination system for our sporting teams this year.

Yours sincerely

Tom Siinmaa

Catholic Police Checks for Volunteers

Catholic Police Check Application Forms are available to download here or at either school office.

Please note - there are many times throughout the school year where visitors are required to have a current Catholic Police Check (parents/caregivers attending excursions, reading in class, helping in class, attending community events).

This process ensures we maintain a child safe environment. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to apply for a Catholic Police Check through either school office.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at either office.

Thanking you

The SJMS Admin Team
