From the Principal

Dear SJMS Community

This is the final newsletter for the term and semester. I am amazed at what has occurred this year and how our children have responded in such a positive way.

The past semester has been like no other. It has been demanding, changing the way we do things and for the students the way they go about their learning and school.

Thank You

Normally at the end of a term I extend my thanks to everyone who has generously volunteered their time in some way, shape or form across the course of the term. However this term I would like say thank you for not coming into the school, as odd as that sounds. I also thank you for adhering to the restrictions put in place to ensure every child remains safe and well in their learning environment. Interestingly during my 20 plus years working in education, this term I have seen less runny noses than ever before - touch wood!

Reports

Last Friday reports would have made their way home. If you haven’t received your child’s Semester 1 Report, please make contact with the School Office.

A letter regarding Parent Teacher Learning Conversations has also been emailed to parents and caregivers. These conversations are forums to discuss points of clarification about your child’s report outcomes and any short-term learning goals that are pertinent. Please note we will be doing these meetings face-to-face, albeit we are asking that due to COVID-19 we ask that the following protocols are followed:

  • Parents/Caregivers are to arrive no earlier than 5 minutes before their interview and sign the COVID-19 Declaration Form which will be available outside your child’s classroom.
  • Once interviews are complete, parents are asked to leave the site immediately.
  • Learning conversations are for parents only - no students are to be on site.
  • Remember to maintain social distancing at all times.

Beginning of Term Arrangements

Term Three commences on Monday 20 July.

Have a safe holiday break!

God Bless

From the Assistant Principal RIM

Dear Parents and Caregivers

In last week’s Gospel, we are asked what price we were prepared to pay in order to create a just, equitable and healthy community? We heard Jesus explain what it meant to be a disciple. In following Jesus and living by Gospel values, we are faced with difficult choices. If we want to expose injustice and dishonesty, then we need to make a commitment to call out on these behaviours and that means calling out family and friends on their actions and behaviours. It might come at a cost to us as it also means that we may need to give up the things we love in order to be a good disciple.

If we want to bring about the reign of God, we need to ‘free’ the marginalised impacted by unjust policies and practises. It is not through our words but instead our actions based on the pattern of Jesus’ life, which encompassed hospitality and welcome to the vulnerable, that allows this to happen. If we put this into action, then we will contribute to a community where we bring life to all things, not only humans.

Loving God
Give us eyes to see the deepest needs of people.
Give us hearts full of love for our neighbours as well as for the strangers we meet.
Help us understand what it means to love others as we love ourselves.
Teach us to care in a way that strengthens those who are sick.
Fill us with generosity so we feed the hungry,
clothe the naked and give drink to the thirsty.
Let us be a healing balm to those who are weak and lonely and weary
by offering our kindness to them.
May we remember to listen, to smile,
to offer a helping hand each time the opportunity presents itself.
Give us hearts of courage that we will be brave enough to risk loving our enemy.
Inspire us to go out of our way to include those in the margins.
Help us to be welcoming and inclusive to all who come to our door.
Let us be God’s hospitality in the world.
Amen

As we come to the end of another term, I would just like to express my gratitude to you all. This term like no other, has been incredibly challenging for all members of our community. It has been pleasing to see our Reception and Year 1 students walk in to school, unpack their bags and be ready for the school day. For parents too, this has been a learning experience as you have allowed your children to develop these strong organisational skills. I look forward to watching our students continue to grow both academically and independently.

I wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday. Enjoy the mid-semester break.

From the Sport Coordinator

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Once again I’d like to thank all students and families in showing great patience and support throughout the term as we, much like the sporting organisations that we work with, have worked on a day by day basis and short notice to try and prepare for Term 3 Sports. Parents will be emailed this week regarding their child/ren's sporting teams and competitions for next term.

Also, thanks to our Year 6 leaders for showing great organisation and communication when conducting training sessions for the sporting teams during recess and lunch times over the last week.

Basketball

Our teams are set to start playing in Week 1 of Term 3 at The ARC Campbelltown. The fixture has not yet been released from the Adelaide Community Basketball Association, however games are expected to take place at either 4pm, 4:40pm or 5:20pm on game days. When they become available, fixtures and a SportsTG player registration link will be emailed to parents of players to complete prior to the season beginning.

Below are the dates of Round 1 games, with teams to play on those specific weekdays throughout the Term 3 and 4 season:

Monday 20 July – Year 5/6
Tuesday 21 July – Year 2/3
Wednesday 22 July – Year 4

As we do not have coaches to hold training sessions for the Year 2/3 and Year 4 teams, I will endeavour to find time during recess and lunch to train the teams next term with our Year 6 Leaders.

Soccer

Unfortunately, EZPSSA has cancelled their 2020 season. Parents involved were notified via email. A statement can be found on their website http://easternzone.homestead.com.

Football

There isn’t any additional information since the last newsletter update regarding our football teams, with the 7 rounds set to run on Saturday mornings from 1 August to 12 September. Mr Stallard and I are hoping to finalise a training day and venue this week that we can pass on to parents for next term. According to the SANFL, fixtures and scheduling won’t be known until potentially Week 1 of Term 3.

Netball

Players are this week receiving their uniforms and getting to know their teammates. Parents will be notified of teams, coaches and training times via email this week. EDNA are hoping to have fixtures and scheduling available by Friday 3 July, with games starting on Saturday 25 July. You will be able to view this information at https://www.ednetball.com.au

Training Provisions

Please note that as sport trainings commence next term, only coaches will be permitted on site during training sessions, who must sign in at the front office upon arrival and departure.

SACPSSA

Netball carnival

Students in Years 4-6 will this week receive a permission form for the SACPSSA Netball Carnival, which will take place on Wednesday 29 July at Netball SA Stadium.

Cross Country

In Week 1 of Term 3 trials will take place to select a Cross Country running team. The carnival will be run on Thursday 6 August in the East Adelaide Parklands.

Touch Football Carnival

Students in Years 4-6 will have the opportunity to participate in the SACPSSA Touch Football Carnival during Week 7 of Term 3 held at Park 17, Touch SA Headquarters. A permission form will follow early next term.

Yours sincerely

Catholic Police Checks for Volunteers

Catholic Police Check Application Forms are available to download here or at either school office.

Please note - there are many times throughout the school year where visitors are required to have a current Catholic Police Check (parents/caregivers attending excursions, reading in class, helping in class, attending community events).

This process ensures we maintain a child safe environment. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to apply for a Catholic Police Check through either school office.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at either office.

Thanking you
