From the Principal

Dear SJMS Community

On Sunday we celebrated Pentecost. In the Gospel, Jesus appeared and breathed the Holy Spirit into his friends. These days, coming to faith is a journey where we discover God’s existence within the realities of our life experiences. This can happen through prayer and reflection. Regular time to pray and reflect is a wonderful practice that can aid with our spiritual growth and enable us to identify our unique gifts and see grace in what the world offers us.

COVID Update

Last week it was wonderful to welcome back the Speech Pathologists and Allied Health professionals who work with students within our school.

Mr Siinmaa writes below giving the latest update on the easing of COVID restrictions and its impact on school sport, which we hope to see up and running in Term 3.

Thank you for your ongoing support toward the limited parent access to the school site. This has assisted with the management of physical distancing of adults and the density of groups on site. I hope we will return to allowing parents and caregivers back in the school sooner rather than later. As soon as these restrictions lift, I will alert the community via the Skoolbag app.

World Environment Day

This Friday we celebrate World Environment Day which is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. World Environment Day began in 1974 and has grown to become a global platform celebrated in over 100 countries.

Each World Environment Day a theme is developed that draws attention to a particularly pressing environmental concern at that period of time. This World Environment Day, it’s ‘Time for Nature’. The foods we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the climate that makes our planet habitable all come from nature. Yet, these are exceptional times in which nature is sending us a message: To care for ourselves we must care for nature.

It’s time to wake up. To take notice. To raise our voices.

This week our Year 5/6 students built 3 planter boxes containing native bush foods from a Bunnings grant won by Miss McGee. You can view the video of the first part of the project here.

The garden includes plants such as Midgen Berry, Salt Bush, Sea Celery, Native Thyme, Aniseed Myrtle, Raspberry Wattle, Pig Face and Murnong Yam.

World Environment Day is a day our students take action or do something to take care of the Earth. Increasingly students are realising that the 'something' can be local, national or global. It can be a solo action or involve a group.

NCCD Data Collection

Last term we provided all families with information about the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability. This term our school is collecting information and evidence about students for whom adjustments are being made. The DDA and Standards use a very broad and inclusive definition of what constitutes a disability, it does not require a medical or professional diagnosis. This can include students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, auditory processing disorder and health conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes and asthma. The decision as to whether a particular child falls within this definition for this data collection relies on the professional judgement of school staff about each child’s additional educational needs. A decision as to whether a child should be included in the data collection will occur in consultation with you, as a parent or carer, if you do not wish your child to be included please contact Toni Benci. The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data is an Australian Government initiative and separate from the current process through which some students receive support through the Catholic Education SA Special Education Program and are also recognised as students with a disability.

Semester One Reports

Our Semester One Reports are an important part of our reporting to families. The reports provide a comprehensive overview of how your child is progressing half way through the year. Reports will be sent home on Friday 26 June, Week 9. These reports are part of a year-long/4 phased reporting process to parents. We have already had our Learning Conversations in Term 1 and of course case by case individual meetings. In Week 1 of Term 3 there will be the opportunity to have a Parent / Teacher Learning Conversation to discuss your child’s report if required, details of how to book an appointment will be made available to you via email on Monday 29 June.

Master Plan

Thank you to those parents and caregivers who contributed towards the detailed design of our Performing Arts Studio presented in our last newsletter.

Below are some drawings of Stage 2 of the Master Plan at William Street. This is the extension of the First Floor, currently where our 5/6 classes are located. This development needs to be completed to fulfil the masterplan process for William St. This aspect of the masterplan counter leavers out to the school boundary towards St Ignatius Oval, making 4 classrooms or themed spaces (one extra than current footprint) with a linked break-out space in-between creating an indoor/outdoor learning space. The area also creates a sense of open collaborative learning spaces conducive to an array of learning opportunities, incorporating various theories of design and pedagogies of learning. While it is difficult to capture what was a 2 hour conversation about this plan, I will ask that you have a look at the plans and feedback any initial thoughts via this link.

God Bless

Dear Parents and Caregivers

On Sunday we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost which is one of the most ancient feasts of the Church. It is celebrated 50 days after Easter (if we count both Easter and Pentecost.)

Christ promised His Apostles that He would send His Holy Spirit, and on Pentecost, they were granted the gifts of the Spirit. The Apostles began to preach the Gospel in all of the languages of the Jewish people who were gathered together, and about 3,000 people were converted and baptised that day.

This is why Pentecost is often called "the birthday of the Church." On this day, with the descent of the Holy Spirit, Christ's mission was completed, and the New Covenant inaugurated.

Holy Spirit let your fire fall on us,

ignite within us,

burn through us.

Holy Spirit fan the flames,

fill our lives, kindle your desires within,

flow through our neighbourhoods.

Holy Spirit burn bright,

cry out for justice,

break through oppression,

bring peace and unity.

Holy Spirit come once more,

fall on us,

ignite within us,

burn through us.

Prayer: Christine Sine: godspace-msa.com

World Environment Day

This Friday we celebrate World Environment Day. This year’s theme is Bio-diversity. Bio-diversity refers to all the variety of life that can be found on Earth (plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms) as well as to the communities that they form and the habitats in which they live.

Please check out this clip from Sr Carmel Pilcher rsj who is currently working with the Fijian community. It helps us to understand our connection to nature and bio-diversity.

From the Sport Coordinator

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Sport Update
With restrictions ever-changing we can now see some light at the end of the tunnel regarding our Football, Soccer and Netball teams ready for the winter sporting season. All sporting organisations that we work with are following the SA Government guidelines as they aim to resume competitions. Training sessions for all sports are on hold, as we are currently not permitted to have parent volunteers on site. Teams will be released when information surrounding the sporting seasons is confirmed and parent volunteers finalised. When any information regarding the resumption of the competitions comes to hand it will be passed to families to give as much notice as possible.

Football
The following comes from the SANFL who run the primary schools competition - "Whilst we aren’t in a position to resume any football activities in schools in term 2 this year, we are hopeful to resume some programs from Term 3. SANFL will be undertaking a review of our capability to deliver our Schools Competition as well as other school programs."

Teams are being finalised and we are currently seeking a venue to host our weekly training sessions. We also require parent volunteers step forward to assist with coaching and managing their child's team for training and during games. Please get in touch if you have a current Catholic Police Clearance and are able to assist.

Soccer
We are yet to have any clarification from EZPSSA as to when the competition will begin and how it will be structured for the winter season. We are also hopeful to secure a venue for the weekly after school training sessions.

Netball
EDNA are yet to release an update on how they will look to begin their schools competition. Our before and after school training sessions are also on hold as we are limited by restrictions relating to allowing parent volunteers on site. Thanks to those who have returned their netball dress to the office to allow for stock taking and redistribution once teams are announced.

Basketball
Due to the indoor venue at The ARC and current restrictions, the remainder of the Term 1 and 2 basketball season looks to be cancelled. The ACBA has recently informed us that with restrictions permitting the Term 3 and 4 season will be able to begin in Week 1 of Term 3, concluding in Week 8 of Term 4. Years 5/6 will continue to play on Monday afternoons, Years 2/3 on Tuesdays and Year 4s on Wednesdays.

In the coming weeks an online nomination form will become available via the SkoolBag app where parents can nominate their child to play Basketball for the Term 3 and 4 season.

As mentioned above, any information regarding your child's sporting competition will be passed on to families via the Skoolbag app when we are notified. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at tom@sjms.catholic.edu.au.

Yours sincerely

Tom Siinmaa

From the Preschool

At SJMS Preschool, we believe that children are at the heart of everything we do and that each child has a special place in our community.

This term our provocation is: what do you want to be when you grow up?

The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about different community helpers as well as finding different ways to reach out to our community.

The children loved learning about Doctors and Nurses in particular, so they decided to make a beautiful thank you poster for Ms Moutakis to deliver to the Norwood Medical Village Centre. Our online students also made some beautiful pictures which were also given to the centre.

Catholic Police Checks for Volunteers

Catholic Police Check Application Forms are available to download here or at either school office.

Please note - there are many times throughout the school year where visitors are required to have a current Catholic Police Check (parents/caregivers attending excursions, reading in class, helping in class, attending community events).

This process ensures we maintain a child safe environment. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to apply for a Catholic Police Check through either school office.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at either office.

Thanking you
