St Joseph's Memorial School Newsletter

Dear Students

As everyone in our community and our government works together to stop the spread
of the Coronavirus (COVID‑19), we have a simple message for you:

You matter to us.

We care about your learning.

And we care about you.

Whether you are at school or at home you are connected in a special way to our school community. As we go forward, school might look and feel different, but we will help you to focus on three important things:

Your learning

We will make sure that you can keep learning whether that be at home or school
to ensure that you can be the best learner that you can be.

By making some changes to how we work together by using Teams or SeeSaw, we will continue to make sure that your schooling continues and you are able to be the best learner and person you can be.

Your care

Your teachers will stay closely connected with you
and support you every step along the way.

They will continue to ‘check in’ and make sure you are clear about what needs
to be done and how to do it. They will continue to support you so that you
c
an continue to be a champion!

Your connection to our school St Joseph's Memorial

Some of the most special times for students in our schools are the celebrations -
Masses and liturgies, sport, TOM, debating, Mission Day, gardening, St Joseph's Day,
daily prayer time, and fundraisers for a range of good causes.

Our school will continue to find creative ways of keeping you connected
so we can still enjoy these wonderful events.

You probably have lots of questions. That’s okay.
We will continue to work closely with your family to support you.

May you and those you care about remain safe and well.

Yours sincerely

Brady Stallard

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Pupil Free Week - Week 11 Term 1 2020

The Government has announced that the final week of this school term (Monday 6 April - Thursday 9 April) will be a Pupil Free Week across all South Australian schools. This means that the last day of Term One for students will be Friday 3 April.

Catholic education occurs in a welcoming, inclusive, and connected community like our wonderful school St Joseph’s Memorial. As a Catholic community we are Easter people, full of faith and love.  Hence our school motto ‘in omnibus caritas’ reminds us who we are meant to be. Maintaining a genuine connection between each other is a way to practise the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love which is at the heart of the Catholic Tradition. Faith is nurtured through opportunities for prayer and the Religious education program. Hope can be expressed through patience and continuity of learning. Love is experienced through the many interactions between schools and students, wherever they are located.

As our school operates an OSHC service, in Week 11 OSHC will operate as it normally does from the Bridge St site (for Preschool to Year 6), providing Before and After School Care, while SJMS will provide school-based care from Bridge St during school hours free of charge. This will essentially look like Vacation Care, however between 8:30am and 3pm it will be supervised by our school ESO’s.

To book your child in for Before School Care, After School Care or the School Hours Supervision, we ask that you contact jess@sjms.catholic.edu.au before 6pm this Friday 3 April 2020. The families who have already booked for the day do not need to re-book, your child/ren's name/s are on the list.

The cost of providing this school based care (8:30-3pm) is borne by the school. It is provided as a school supervised service, not an OSHC service.

Please note that Vacation Care will continue in the holidays. Bookings can be made for this on the iParent Portal.

Term 2

From the commencement of Term 2, unless informed otherwise by the Government, Catholic schools will remain open to provide remote curriculum delivery and to support students whose particular circumstances require them to be at school.

We will work with families of students who will require attendance at school during this time. This will include children whose parents are required to be at work.

Learning will be delivered simultaneously in school and at home in Term 2. All students will access the same mode of learning; those at school will be supervised to access the same curriculum provided for those who will access it remotely. This mode of learning will continue until we are advised differently by the government. To assist the school ascertain your intentions for Term 2 and to allow the school to effectively plan we are asking all families to complete the survey here.

Online Learning

SJMS is working to guarantee that learning will continue for your child. We will ensure that students can continue their studies remotely and remain connected with their teachers. For this reason, all students will have access to a 'Learning Pack' which will support them either at school or at home.

Learning Pack Collection Day

To support those students who will be working remotely, 'Learning Packs' can be collected on Thursday 9 April 2020 from the William Street Courts between 10am and 4pm.

Please drive through onto the William St courts and staff located in the Transportables will walk to your car and hand you your child’s personalised 'Learning Pack’.

When collecting please remain in your car.

During Term 2, from 8 May 2020 these packs will be available on a fortnightly basis on Fridays between 8:15am and 4:15pm.

Commitment to your child

Please be assured. Your child matters to us. Your family matters to us.

Our absolute commitment is that we will support your child in their learning and wellbeing at this difficult time whether they are physically at school or at home.

Over the coming weeks Mrs Vassallo-Wakefield, Mrs Benci and myself will be in phone contact with families to ensure you are travelling well.

God Bless

From the Assistant Principal RIM

Dear Parents and Caregivers

This is our second week where as a Catholic Community, we haven’t been able to come together to celebrate Sunday Eucharist and, in our School Community, not being able to participate in masses (class, parish and school), which is not something that has been a part of my own experience as a teacher in Catholic Schools. So, we need to find other ways of coming together and connecting.

The Adelaide Catholic Archdiocese has provided links to many useful sites where families can celebrate Mass. The link below will take you to this site:

http://www.adelaide.catholic.org.au/news-and-events/coronavirus-updates-and-alerts/online-mass-and-prayer-services

Below are some online Resources for Prayer that you may find helpful:

Sacred Space Daily Prayer: www.sacredspace.ie

Madonna Magazine/Australian Jesuits: www.pray.com.au

Pray As You Go / Pray As You Stay: www.pray-as-you-go.org

And the people stayed home, and read books, and listened, and rested.

And exercised, and made art, and played games.

And learned new ways of being, and were still, and listened more deeply.

Some meditated, some prayed, some danced, some met their shadows.

And the people began to think differently.

And the people healed,

And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless and heartless ways,

the earth began to heal.

And when the danger passed, and people joined together again,

They grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images.

And created new ways to live and heal the earth fully,

As they had been healed.

April Holiday Vacation Care

Bookings are open for the April school holidays via the iParent Portal.

Bookings will close Monday 6 April - please book before this date.

Vacation Care will run from 7am until 6pm at the Bridge St campus (there won't be any incursions or excursions - all activities will be educator run).

We ask all children to wear old clothes that can get messy - we will be having a lot of fun!

Children will need to bring:

  • All their own food and snacks (due to COVID-19 and limits on shopping, OSHC will not provide food and no cooking will occur during Vacation Care to protect all involved).
  • Water bottle.
  • Sun safe hat.
  • Sneakers/sport shoes.

Please note: In the event that we are full, bookings will be determined by the 'Priority of Access' guidelines.

Catholic Police Checks for Volunteers

Catholic Police Check Application Forms are available to download here or at either school office.

Please note - there are many times throughout the school year where visitors are required to have a current Catholic Police Check (parents/caregivers attending excursions, reading in class, helping in class, attending community events).

This process ensures we maintain a child safe environment. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to apply for a Catholic Police Check through either school office.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at either office.

Thanking you
